Lavinia Hotel by sea side is one of the earliest Hotels in the country and it remained one of the premier Hotels in Sri Lanka until 1960s when bigger Hotels of International Standards started to be built. However Mt. Lavinia Hotel is still a popular Hotel in Sri Lanka. The city is also well known for St. Thomas College by the seaside. The college is a leading educational institution up to the middle of the 20th century which has produced several Prime Ministers and prominent politicians.

It lies alongside a wind-swept headland jutting into the waters of the Indian Ocean. Mt. Lavinia is a popular bathing spot for its white sand and calm waves. The hotel earlier was the Governors House built in 1805 by Sir Thomas Maitland which was later converted into this hotel. |
